Bulk ABN cancellations set to continue

Bulk ABN cancellations

The ATO is increasing focus on the bulk Australian business number (ABN) cancellation program to ensure the integrity of the Australian Business Register.

They have refined their models to identify businesses that are no longer active or have forgotten to cancel their ABN when they ceased business. Things they’ll look for include ABN holders that:

  • have stopped reporting business income or expenses
  • provide no other indications they may be in business
The ATO excludes those they know are renting out property, or are receiving income elsewhere.

If your ABN is cancelled as part of this bulk cancellation process and you need it in the future, you can reapply and will receive the same ABN if the business structure is the same.
